· In the workplace, in interest-driven settings, and in unfamiliar social situations, it is indeed necessary to restrain purposeless sharing. Talking too much easily exposes information, gives others leverage, and drains energy.
· Gossip, complaining, lecturing, showing off, and being overly intimate too soon are mostly negative-return idle talk; the less, the better.
· “Opening the mouth scatters vital energy; moving the tongue gives rise to trouble” is not a strict scientific conclusion, but it reminds people to say less nonsense and conserve energy, which has practical value.

What needs correction:
To reduce the purposes of speech to “making people happy, getting people to do things, and making oneself money” turns relationships into pure instruments. Much genuinely useful communication brings no immediate benefit: sincere sharing builds trust, emotional expression gains support, casual conversation reveals opportunities, and discussion collides ideas. In intimate relationships, if every sentence asks “What benefit does this bring?”, it will push people away.

A more stable principle is not “say nothing unless it brings benefit,” but:

  1. Say less nonsense in interest-driven settings; keep sincerity in intimate relationships.
  2. Do not gossip, complain, show off, or lecture others on how to live.
  3. Before important words, ask: Is it true? Is it necessary? Is it kind? Is now the right time?
  4. The desire to share can remain, but choose the right person, the right occasion, and keep boundaries.
  5. Listen first, speak later; draw fewer conclusions; avoid being too intimate too soon.

So this passage is suitable as a defensive communication guideline, not as a guideline for all of life. Guarding the mouth is guarding one’s fortune, but guarding it too tightly will also shut relationships and opportunities outside the door.
